Baba Wagué Diakité Baba Wague Diakite was born in Bamako, Mali, in West Africa. He spent most of his early childhood in a small village with his grandparents and his many cousins, aunts, and uncles. There he tended sheep and helped in the rice and peanut fields. His fondest memories of those days are of gathering around the fire every evening to listen to his grandmother tell stories. Although Wague grew up drawing, he began to work with clay when he moved to the United States in 1985. Since then, he has been using the clay surfaces of pottery as his canvas. The artwork in this book took the form of hand-painted ceramic tiles. Wague's numerous solo exhibitions throughout the U.S. have been highly acclaimed here and abroad. And he has long delighted children with his storytelling in schools all over the northwestern United States. Wague now lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife, Ronna, and their daughters, Penda June and Amina Marie. This is his first book. |
