Summary
Gregory Hilliard and his wife leave England for Egypt, hoping the warmer climate will benefit her health. Gregory's path ultimately leads him to join the army, which, under Kitchener's command, attempts to defend Egypt and subdue the Mahdist forces of the Sudan.
