Gerald McDermott Gerald McDermott, who was born in Detroit, developed a childhood fascination with drawing and painting at the Detroit Institute of Arts. In high school, his silk-screen prints and watercolors brought him highest honors in the National Scholastic Magazines Art Competition, including a scholarship to Pratt Institute in New York City. Once in New York, McDermott pursued a dual interest in graphics and film-making. He created a series of animated films based on folklore and mythology, one of which he later developed into his first picture book, Anansi the Spider, a Caldercott Honor Book. Since then McDermott's animated films and illustrated books have brought him international recognition. He was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1975 for Arrow to the Sun. His recent book, The Knight of the Lion (Four Winds), is a stirring tale of courage and adventure, filled with the rich imagery and chivalric traditions of Arthurian legend. Sun Flight is based on Gerald McDermott's animated film of the same name. It was awarded the Zellerbach Award for Film as Art at the San Francisco International Film Festival |
