Below is a list of common browsers for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh OS X and directions for how to assign fonts to particular languages.
 
Microsoft Windows Browsers
 
Internet Explorer 5 and 6
  • Select the Tools menu on your browser
  • Select the Internet Options choice
  • Select the Fonts button at the bottom of the box
  • In the window that pops up, select the language you want from the Language Script menu
  • A list of choices for Web Page and Plain Text fonts should appear below
  • If no fonts appear, you need to install a font - see step 3 on the foreign character help page
  • If fonts are available, select the font you want to use, and make sure the examples below the lists look correct
  • Select OK to close this window and then the Internet Options window
Netscape Navigator 6 and 7, Firefox
  • Select the View menu on your browser
  • Scroll down to Character Coding and select Customize
  • Select the language you want from the Available Character Codings list
  • If no languages appear, you need to install a font - see step 3 on the foreign character help page
  • If you see the language you want, click the Add button to add it to the Active Character Codings
  • Select OK to close the window
Opera 6 and 7
  • Select the Tools menu on your browser
  • Scroll down and select Preferences
  • In the box that pops up, select Languages
  • Click the Add button
  • Select the language you want from the list
  • If the language you want isn't there, you need to install a font - see step 3 on the foreign character help page
  • If you see the language you want, select it and click OK
  • Select OK to close the window

Macintosh OS X Browsers
 
Internet Explorer 5
  • Select the View menu on your browser
  • Scroll down to Character Set to see which encoding is selected
  • If Universal Alphabet (UTF-8) is selected, your browser is set correctly
  • Otherwise, select Universal Alphabet (UTF 8)
Netscape Navigator 6 and 7, Firefox
  • Select the View menu on your browser
  • Scroll down to Character Coding to see which encoding is selected
  • If Unicode (UTF-8) is selected, your browser is set correctly
  • If not, and you see Unicode as a choice, select it
  • If Unicode is not a choice, select More to see more choices, then select Unicode
Opera 6
  • Select the View menu on your browser
  • Scroll down to Encoding to see which encoding is selected
  • If Unicode (UTF-8) is selected, your browser is set correctly
  • Otherwise, select Unicode (UTF 8)
Safari
  • Select the View menu on your browser
  • Scroll down to Text Encoding to see which encoding is selected
  • If Unicode (UTF-8) is selected, your browser is set correctly
  • Otherwise, select Unicode (UTF 8)
